Friday, December 8, 2017

Hi,

This week, the students will not be bringing home their Purple Homework folders. Unfortunately, I’ve been ill the past few days and did not have the chance to prepare their weekly Friday letters and math homework sheet. However, they still have homework assignments for the week, that are completed online.

Here is the homework assignment for this week:

Subject
Assignment
Due Date
Math
Prodigy – play the online game and answer at least 10 questions
Thursday
Math
IXL – Try some questions in the following sections:
Grade 4: J4, J5
Grade 5: P4, P5
Thursday
Reading
Read at least 3 books on Raz Kids, record one of them for Ms. Kwong to hear
Thursday

Please remind your child to dress warmly for school, as temperatures will drop to approximately -10 degrees next week (with the wind, it will feel more like -15 degrees). Please ensure your child has a warm winter jacket, a hat and gloves/mittens. Scarves, snowpants (or wearing 2 pairs of pants), boots would also help keep your child warm recesses and lunchtimes.

This week, both the Grade 4 and 5 ESL classes visited the local public library.  If you child doesn't already have one, he/she can get a free library card to borrow books, CDs, DVDs and other materials at the library.  They can also use the computers at the library with their library card, both for homework assignments and for playing games.  To get a library card, you have to accompany your child and bring a proof of identification and address (e.g., a driver's licences or a copy of your lease).  The library is a great resource for your child and your family - both for learning and enjoyment.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Cheers,
Wendy

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins! We have started our investigation of pumpkins, integrating language (reading books about pumpkins, oral discussions to build vocabulary, learning about the 5Ws and H in asking questions to guide our inquiry) and math (counting the number of seeds, measuring the pumpkins). Next week, we will continue our exploration by roasting the seeds to make a delicious snack, and write simple sentences about pumpkins.

I took some pictures from our messy, but informative, learning about pumpkins today, and I will post them when I get a chance to (I will blur out the faces of the students, but you will see what they were doing).

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We had a fabulous time on our Fall hike to the Valley yesterday!  It was a wonderful learning opportunity, as we looked for things related to our study of Autumn.  It was great to hear lots of students asking, "What's that?" and building their English vocabulary.  If you have a chance, ask your child what they saw on the walk.  They can answer both in your home language, and list some items in English as well.

Starting this week, I will be using this website and email to give you news about our class, instead of sending a letter home in the Purple Folder.  This will help the environment, and also make it easier to translate if necessary.  If you have given me your email address (on the yellow form), I will also be sending out emails with news and updates.

Here is a summary of our learning the past 2 weeks:
Oral Language: following simple instructions, introducing ourselves, days of the week
Reading: Books and poems about Fall, focusing on vocabulary building
Writing:  Finished our All About Me Book, Fall Words Book, Colours of Fall book, writing about our Fall Walk, Reflection Letters
Math:  finished Place Value unit (quiz coming home today); adding with and without regrouping

Letters (focus): a, s, t, p
Sight Word (focus): it, is, was, see, and

Vocabulary:  Fall (pumpkin, hay, football, flowers, squirrel, turkey, leaf, acorn, apple, carrots, Canada Geese, pine cone, jacket, autumn, pants, sweaters, coat, migrate, flock, ripe, costume, rake), Colours (red, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown, black, white, gray)

Curriculum Afternoon Presentation

Hi,

I just realized I forgot to send home the Curriculum Afternoon Powerpoint package last week, with the Grade 5 ESL students.  Instead of sending it home now, here is the link to the Google Slide presentation:

If you have any questions or concerns about our program, please feel free to contact me.
